What to Plan & Save for When Living On Your Own

Ever since I graduated, I’ve been compiling a list of items that I know I want to have when I eventually move out. I never thought about the basic items that one needs! Thankfully, my parents are currently in the process of building a home and when they move in they’ll be replacing some of their older items, so I’m hoping some of them will go to me (if I’m being honest). But I definitely believe that there are some items that are important to plan and save money for. While there will always be a cheaper alternative to something, I believe that when it comes to an item that you’ll have for a long time, it’s important to splurge a little. You don’t have to have to buy a new item every couple months or years to replace one that broke, went bad, etc.!

If you have any items in addition to my (short) list, please leave them down below! I am always looking for items that would make great additions to my home.

+ Electronics
I know that once I live on my own I want to have an AppleTV, some version of an Amazon Alexa, etc. These are things that will last a very long time. Yes, they are additional pieces to your home, but they are items that I’ve come to love during my time at school and being around my family. Once I figure out my job situation and settle in, I also may be looking to replace my laptop or get a desktop computer. Something about having a clean slate with a new item like that when you’re starting a career or new aspect of your life really stands out to me.

+ Bedroom Basics
I don’t know about you guys, but I have been researching several companies that ship mattresses to you! While I love going to a mattress store and test out all the different types they may have, it can definitely put a major hole in your wallet. Companies like Casper make it easy when it comes to your bedroom basics. Since teaming up with Target stores across the US and Canada, Casper has brought their sleep accessories and demo mattresses closer than ever before. Target is currently selling their sheets and pillows in store, but you’ll still need to purchase the mattress online! I typically sleep on a queen size mattress and theirs sells for $950 and ships for free within twenty-four hours. How awesome is that? If you’re moving somewhere on a tight schedule and don’t have time to go to a mattress store, test out the types they have, wait for it to get delivered, etc. then I would highly recommend checking the mattress out online and in your local Target!

+ Kitchen Supplies
This may be a weird thing that I love shopping for, but I find a joy in shopping for new things to deck out my kitchen with. For my birthday my parents actually purchased a really nice and cute silverware set for me, and safe to say I’m super excited to use them! Aside from pots, pans, bowls, etc. I definitely want to look into food delivery services such as Hello Fresh or Blue Apron. At the moment, I’m thinking about Hello Fresh because of it being a little healthier, so let me know if you’ve tried them out!

At the end of the day, when it comes to moving, less is more!

I believe that with some of these mentioned products, you’ll save more money in the long run because you’re purchasing higher quality items that won’t wear and tear as easily! I understand some people may have opposing views of this, but it’s something my family has always lived by so it’s something I’ve learned from them.

    • They definitely are!!

  • Don’t forget to buy a good set of Tupperware for your kitchen! Especially if you’re living alone, you’ll generally always have leftovers of what you cook. Also, I would suggest getting a laptop with a docking station! That way you can have the set up of a desktop computer when you want, but the mobility of still having your laptop to take with you when you want to do some work at Starbucks. 🙂

    • That is such a great idea! Thank you so much!! 🙂

  • Blondes & Bagels

Love this post, Kendal! Okay so weeeee actually totally got our mattress from Casper back in January RIGHT before they upped their prices! Honestly? I’d even pay the new price for it. I love it. Zero regrets.

I also tried Blue Apron for a while and totally feel you – in hindsight I wish their stuff was just a wee bit healthier. One night it was like a fresh kale and fish dish and the next was a burger (lol). Guess it’s hard to complain about eating a burger!

    • Me too!! I can’t wait to go shopping for my own place 🙂

  • I’m with you on saving money! I’m currently at home too, because loans and a starting salary doesn’t quite cut it. But I’ve been saving for things too. It’s so much to think about!! This is a good list of items too!
