Four Things I Wish I Did My Freshman Year | College Advice

With the start of the school year in full swing, I thought I would share another bit of college advice. Going into my freshman year, I was completely overwhelmed. There are so many people to meet, places to go, and things to do. While my school was small compared to others, I still felt like an incredibly small fish in a big pond.

Thankfully, Elon did some things to help bring the freshmen together, like an organization fair, orientation groups, Elon 101 classes, etc. that all really helped us get to know one another. But looking back on my four-year experience, there are definitely some things that I wish I did! Now, this doesn’t mean I didn’t love my time at school… because I did! I loved school so much, and want to try to share my experience to help some of you who, like me, was an incredibly introverted person going into her college career.

Without further ado, here are the five things I wish I did during my freshman year.

+ Join More Organizations and/or Clubs

Even though I did join a couple organizations, it wasn’t until my junior or senior year. I had no idea what I wanted to be a part of at school, and when I did I got intimidated by the application to the organization. For example, I wish I joined *at least* one of the communications-oriented groups. While I did join the magazine briefly during my sophomore year, and then as a designer my senior year, I wish I spoke up more and made a bigger initiative to get a larger role!

+ Explore Different Minors

I minored in political science during my time at school. While I enjoyed it, I wish I looked at different minors as well. For example, I wish I looked into marketing! That’s something looking back on during my job search that definitely would have helped.

+ Speak Up More In Class

It’s not a secret that I don’t like speaking up in class. If I’m being honest, I don’t know many people that do. There were times in class where a professor would ask a question and I would just think the answer, and it would end up being correct. If I took the extra effort to raise my hand, I could have helped show my professor that I cared just a bit more. It also helps your professor know you more and build a bigger connection.

+ Explore the Local Area

My school was in a very, very small town. Even though I had a car, I didn’t drive around that much. Of course, I went to the grocery store, Target, and the occasional mall, but there are still areas that I wish I went to! There was an amusement park around two hours away, great hiking spots between an hour to over two hours away, etc. These would have been great opportunities to de-stress during hard times.

Is there anything you wish you did during your time at school, or advice you would give to incoming or current freshmen?

  • Love these tips. I didn’t get off of campus until senior year, when I had a car. I wish I’d done it more throughout college!

  • Great tips, Kendal!!! There’s an entrepreneurship minor at my school that I wish I would’ve explored earlier on!
